Cement is the single most-bought building material in Kenya, and the questions are always the same: how much is a bag today, and how many bags do I need? This guide answers both with current prices from sellers on Buy More Mall.

| Cement (loose) | Price |
|---|---|
| Cement Per Kg | KSh 20 |
Loose cement suits small repairs where a full bag would go to waste.
Standard bags in Kenya are 50 kg. Always check the weight and grade printed on the bag.
| Grade | Strength | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 32.5 (32.5N / 32.5R) | General purpose | Mortar for blocks and stone, plastering, screeds, light concrete |
| 42.5 (42.5N / 42.5R) | Higher strength | Structural concrete: columns, beams, slabs, foundations |
The grade is printed on every bag. For structural work, follow your engineer's specification.
It depends on the mix. These are standard approximate figures for 50 kg bags:
| Mix (cement : sand : ballast) | Common use | Approx. bags per m³ |
|---|---|---|
| 1 : 3 : 6 | Blinding, mass concrete | About 4.5 |
| 1 : 2 : 4 (Class 20) | Floor slabs, footings | About 6.5 |
| 1 : 1.5 : 3 (Class 25) | Columns, beams, suspended slabs | About 8 |
A slab 6 m long, 4 m wide and 150 mm (0.15 m) thick holds 6 × 4 × 0.15 = 3.6 m³ of concrete. At about 6.5 bags per m³ (1:2:4), that is about 24 bags. Add 5–10% for waste.
How many bags for a whole house? It depends entirely on the design: the number of rooms, wall lengths, foundation, slab and finishes. A quantity surveyor or your fundi can prepare a bill of quantities (BQ) from the plan, and that gives the real figure.
| Waterproof cement (per kg) | Price |
|---|---|
| Waterproof Cement-Regular | KSh 120 |
| Waterproof Cement-Premium | KSh 150 |
Waterproof cement, or a waterproofing compound mixed with cement, is used where water sits or seeps: water tanks, bathrooms, roofs and slabs, basements and retaining walls. Follow the mixing instructions on the product.
