Damp rising from the ground ruins floors and walls. A damp proof membrane (DPM) under the floor slab stops it, and polythene sheeting has a hundred other uses on site. Here are current prices from Biglit on Buy More Mall.

| Where | A sheet under the ground floor slab | A strip in the walls, just above ground level |
| Stops | Damp rising through the floor | Damp rising up the walls |
The two should overlap at the wall so there is no gap for damp to get through.
For the slab itself, see Cement Price in Kenya; steel and BRC mesh are in Building Materials Price List.

DPM is a sheet under the floor slab; DPC is a strip in the walls just above ground level. Both stop rising damp.
Blind the hardcore with sand, lay the DPM flat and up the walls, overlap joints at least 150 mm and tape them, then pour the slab.
Use a sheet sold as DPM, or a heavy construction-grade polythene; thin plastic tears easily under concrete.
