How to Start a Small Bottled Water or Juice Business in Kenya (2026): Machines, KEBS and Costs

Packaged water and fresh juice sell every day in Kenya: in shops, offices, schools and events. A small bottling business can start with semi-automatic machines and grow into a full line. This guide covers the equipment, the approvals and the order to buy things in.

1. Choose Your Product

  • Bottled water (500 ml to 20 litres): needs reliable treatment (RO or UF plus UV) and very clean filling.
  • Fresh juice: short shelf life; sell locally and fast, and keep it cold.

2. Approvals

  1. Register the business name with the Business Registration Service (on eCitizen), or register a company if you have partners.
  2. Get a KRA PIN for the business from KRA; you will need it for permits, suppliers and tax returns.
  3. Get a Single Business Permit from your county government for the premises. Fees depend on the county and the size of the business.
  4. Product certification: packaged water and juices must meet the relevant Kenyan standard and carry the KEBS Standardization Mark before they are sold. KEBS tests samples and inspects the premises.
  5. County public health: the premises and staff must meet food-handling requirements.
  6. Water source: if you use a borehole, make sure the water use is permitted and the water is tested regularly.

Plan the premises first: KEBS and public health will look at separate rooms for treatment, filling and storage, washable walls and floors, and hand-washing points. It is cheaper to design this in from the start.

3. Water Treatment

Bottled water starts with treatment. See Industrial RO Plant Price, UV Sterilizer Price and Borehole Water Treatment.

4. Bottle Washing and Filling

5. Sealing, Labelling and Coding

Every pack needs a batch number and expiry date. See Sealing Machines and Batch Coding & Labelling Machines.

6. For Juice

Wash fruit and cane well, keep juice chilled from pressing to sale, and label it with the date made.

7. Start Small, Then Scale

  1. Start with semi-automatic machines and one or two bottle sizes.
  2. Build steady customers (shops, offices, schools) before adding sizes or flavours.
  3. Move to automatic filling and labelling when manual work is holding back sales.
